    Painting my mast

for max life you want a wood stablizing clear epoxy primer (solvent based) - a few coats of real marine spar varnish and then roll and tip (or spray) two part LPU clear with uv blockers (most 2 part polys do not have uv blockers due to added cost). google ESP 155, India Spar Varnish, Acrylic...

How long will barrier coat last?

air can escape from a blasted unsealed hull under an epoxy barrier coat (which is generally 100% surface bond). Apply coatings to hulls when temp is falling so any air in the fiberglass skin will be cooling and contracting. If applied when temps rise the air has to go someplace as it expands...

How long will barrier coat last?

barrier coats are just a layer of epoxy paint (10 -20 mils thick) designed to waterproof a porous fiberglass hull system. It will not 'wear out' etc. but like any coating system, it can fail due to poor adhesion, flexing etc. Blasting etc can contaminate the surface for a less then perfect bond...

    Painting with Awlgrip

these are LPU coatings - linear polyurethene. Just like 2 part auto paints. Two flavors - acyrlic polyurethane and polyester polyurethane. Sell for about $100 - $200 a gallon in industrial non marine settings. a cheap way to go is to use a regular enamel as the pigment coat and then a clear 2...

    Engine room paint choices?

an epoxy paint will handle standing fuel spills and battery acid - generally solvent free and odorless. an mcu metalic paint like aluminum filled aluthane will handle 300 degree temps and is also a good wood or fiberglass sealer. High solvent levels and VOC

    best glue for laminated beam

use a thickened epoxy paste like Wet Dry 700 (which can also be applied underwater and has a history of saving sinking yachts and leaking swimming pools) - take care not to clamp too tightly - with epoxies if you clamp tightly you sqeeze out all the epoxy and the bond fails - this is different...

    west systems fillers

when adding thickeners to epoxies keep in mind that some brands of epoxies are way more brittle than others. Those with very very brittle epoxies are the least likely to mention brittleness issues. Bittle epoxy is not good in dealing with impact issues. of course when using epoxy with...

Marine Tex for filling screw holes

the big issue is the thickener. Assume the epoxy has crap as a filler. Instead use something like wet dry 700 epoxy paste with is thickened with kevlar and feldspar ceramic. Another trick is to use fine sand in the epoxy... finally coat the bolts /screws with grease and insert into the wet...

recommended refinish to to strip back to the wood. Two coats of solvent thinned epoxy (make your own or ESP 120). This will stabilize and seal the wood. Then several coats of spar varnish to provide the UV protect, mil thickness and gloss. this may also solve the water problem too.

To Varnish or not to varnish, that is the question!?!

solvent thinned epoxy (like esp 155 or make your own) to seal the wood and provide a stable substrate. then a few coats of traditonal spar varnish which provides UV protection and mil thickness A win-win combination.
