I’ve got a 1977 boat with single Perkins 4-236. The transmission I can’t find any markings, too much blue paint!
Anyway, I am trying to find how to check fluid level. I have a dipstick but don’t know if I am supposed to check it running, running in gear, warm but off, cold.
Maybe some of you old timers will recognize it. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

I can only tell you about my transmission. Mine is a Twin Disc MG5050 and the fluid is checked with the engine warm, idling in neutral. However, I did take note of where the fluid ended up when the engine was cold and not running, making everyday pre-start checks easier.

Looks like a Borg-Warner Velvet drive. Check oil with engine off soon after shutdown. Takes Dexron ATF.

Thank you. I had a friend id it. Looks like the difference between correct level cold and hot is about .300. I scribed a mark on the dip stick. Thanks for everyone’s help.
