I know I am not the first to remodel the aft cabin and put a full size berth athwartship. I found 2 examples this week on Yachtworld. I may, however, be the only one to put in an adjustable bed. The head and knees go up and down. When Mother comes to visit, she cannot sleep laying down, so I retreat to the v berth and she gets a good night's sleep. It's wifi enabled too, so I can sit her up from my phone if the snoring gets too loud

The washer/dryer is vented outside via the locker next to it. The relocated dresser is on wheels with hardware securing it in place, but allowing access to shelving behind it. The steps are on casters and the headboard can fold down. I did not reduce the size of the drawers under the berth, so they cannot be removed. The other two drawers were cut down to fit in the galley under the replaced stove. I will post the galley refit another day.

I hope someone finds this interesting. If so, I can take more pics to post. Waiting on new curtains that are not so LOUD. lol

Looks very nice, lot of work. Keep the photos coming.

Further refits

On the subject of refitting, I changed out the two basin, undermount sink in the galley with an apron front from Ikea and a victorian faucet. The whiskey cabinet is in front of the former fridge space, now holding the dishwasher.

Why I moved the whiskey cabinet

This is the 14.5 cube fridge that has been covered in teak veneer. I moved the whiskey cabinet to make room for it and create the L shaped galley I was coveting.

Hi Hedley - here is another example of an athwartship conversion (mine). I did this on a provisional basis and have not yet finished the port side dresser arrangement (I like your arrangement btw).

When we bought our 1974 42 classic it still had the original identical "twin" beds port and stbd.

The new bed is a "full" size, which just allowed the bathroom door to fully open. It also just allows the small chest freezer which came with the boat to stay in place at the foot of the bed. We prefer our heads at the outboard side - it gives us a bit of a side table and also lets us have a reading light. I also have my backup plotter mounted there for night time anchor watch.

On the port side I provisionally placed the dresser on the unchanged original twin bunk.

The latest part of my conversion was to increase the headroom over our heads a little and to remove the sharp corner. We sleep with our heads under the stbd side deck and I kept banging my head as I sat up. I removed the headliner and battens under the deck and cut the vertical panel up about 4". I then glued on 1/2" camping foam followed by a vinyl and a piece of teak trim. We now have a rounded, padded corner.

I just gave up on this post. Too many sideways pictures!! I guess there is a post-it that discusses how to avoid this. It is really hard to make good sense out of upside down or sideways pictures.

Sorry Captain, I tried to fix this morning, but editing had timed out. From now on, I will hold the phone at portrait instead of landscape. In the meantime, if you are using a laptop, the bottom of all of my mistakes is on the right hand side of the picture. I just turned my screen.

more pictures, better rotation

Hope this is better....:banghead:

That's nice work. Is that a double/full or a queen?

One thing I appreciate about this layout is that the carved bench/headboard gives the person sleeping aft against the bulkhead a midnight escape-route to the head without climbing over the other person. I might add a handgrip or two to aid that climb, but that's nitpicking.

It is in the works, thanks.
