We decided to transit the NJ Intercoastal from Barnegat to Cape May since the winds and seas are starting to kick up and wont be subsiding for a few days. Arrived in Atlantic City yesterday. We planned to continue on tomorrow but learned yesterday that the railroad bridge at stature mile 68.9 is stuck in the down position. They have apparently ordered parts but have no projected time frame for repair. Just a heads up in case anyone else is in this area thinking of trying the inside.

What's the controlling depth through the ICW there?

Channel Depths
The proverbial fly in the ointment! Every effort is made to maintain a controlling depth of 6’ throughout the waterway, but due to continuous shoaling, depths of 3’ MLW may be found especially in the areas south of Barnegat Bay.

The Cape May Canal Project Depth is 12’ between Cape May Harbor and the Delaware Bay. Mariners should be aware that the last survey of the Cape May Canal, done in April 2013, showed a least controlling depth of 4.1 feet mid-channel with 1.2 feet in the left outside quarter, between Spicer Creek Canal and the Delaware Bay at MLLW.

From AC north on NJ icw take it on a rising tide only .

CM Canal 12 feet, that’s a good one! You can count on six at low water in the center as long as it’s not a blowout tide.

From Barnegat to Atlantic City the shallowest we saw was a little over 5' and that was only in a couple of spots. The majority of the stretch was 8+. We actually transited right at low tide. We paid close attention to the marks and not to the magenta line on the chart plotter. No issues but a little nervous when we saw the 5+ feet. Only 2.2 foot range in most of that section.
