Jefferson 42

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
On our Jefferson we found that each shaft has three cutlass bearings, the forward one being part of the packing gland assembly. When you get her into the yard be sure to check for that. Increased our yard bill unexpectedly, but that always happens in the yard.

Hi slymeso44,
I found that rain runs down the radar arch and into the flybridge starboard under bench storage. From there it runs down the wall to the galley. I used clear RTV and put a couple "rain defectors" on the outside of the radar arch and sealed up the storage bench bottoms (funny how water can wrap around edges and canvas). Seemed to work last year, we'll see if it holds up.

I keep finding that once I pull the rotten paneling off an area I get drips of water or even a steady stream when raining from the fiberglassed horizontal wall stringers that it was were nailed to. I keep trying to find the sources as it appears to travel quite a ways. I have injected soap and pressurized (after sealing nail holes) and found leaks (like under the sundeck side doors). Anyone have other techniques? BTW, I didn't find an industrial IR camera showed me anything.

BTW, anyone found a replacement for the 2 opening ports 21 X 11" in the transom in the master stateroom? I got several quotes in the Mystic, Ct area wanting $4k to glass in the openings. Seems like a bad place to have a portlight.

thank you hpogue123

I don't have a radar arch, but I did try sealing under the starboard flybridge setae, at the edging, and resealed all the upper window, still have those 2 small one, I just don't want to have to replace that paneling again in a few years because of those leak, I'm just going to have to remove that seat and see if I can get a better view

thank for the tips

it seem that leak are the Achilles heal of the Jefferson

Getting the new/additional electronics/NAV systems installed within next two weeks. Comes for haul out June 25th for all the survey items.

Our new home and it will be how we want it.

Congrats!! I have a 1987; what year is yours? Would love to compare notes.

Congratulations! Nice boat.

I would have thought Number 5 would be a big issue on this boat. Am I missing something. Is this just a tune up issue?

Hi Drocc,
I also have an '87 Jefferson 42 Sundeck with twin Perkins Range 4-200 (6.354s). I doing a lot of re-wiring, chasing water leaks and re-paneling and would love to compare notes. I am pulling my hair out over cleaning up the wiring and lack of engine/controls wiring schematics. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

We have a 89 42 Jefferson sundeck for the last 4 years, love the space and she is a great boat, Bahama to Halifax, no issues, those Perkin are tanks, just make sure to replace your anode twice a years, those many/cooler are super expensive and hard to find!
I'm having problems finding the anodes. I checked the likely brass bolts in the exchangers but they were plugs and the inner tubing interfered with the pencil zincs (too long). Do you cut them down?
Thanks

Yup, cut them to fit. First, finger tight, cut off another 1/4 or 3/8" you should be fine.

Been busy so I have neglected posting. Anyway, we have installed the new electronics with double redundancy. My training has always stressed having backups.

Going through the original owners library. (I am third owner) I found all the original paperwork, certified boat builder plans with blueprints and full wiring, plumbing and mechanical blueprints. Even ones for my breaker panel.

That's awesome you have all the original paperwork. Makes things easy and knowledge is power. I'm still going through all the North Star's manuals and paper work. We had it hauled out on Tuesday. The survey went well. The only majors are the Rudders will need to be pulled and new bearings and seals installed and the swim step will need the brackets addressed because of corrosion. Should be in the yards till mid week.

I'm wondering if your hull looks the same. I think they came out of the same mold but not sure. Post pics of your haul out.

Hull

They look virtually the same and even the slope of the helm windows.

I agree. I'm wondering if you have the same deep keel. I think they came from the same molds.

As Dan mentioned, you can simply cut them with a hacksaw. Many pencil zinc sizes can be found in varying lengths as well. My engine's Heat exchanger takes a 1.75" anode. I used to cut down the 2" but got tired of it so I found a source for the 1.75". I know in my size there are also 1.5" available.

It's getting new prop shafts and rudders. That corrosion is at the packing gland.IMG_5235.jpgIMG_5240.jpg

Hi Rondalw1,
Any way you could take your plans and blueprints to Kinkos or something and get them scanned? I'd be glad to pay to get a copy of that documentation. It would really help!
Thanks

The strut that holds the prop shaft is rather different on the CHB versus the Jefferson.

The CHB has a longer double leg one that extend down from the hull at some distance.
The Jefferson not so much. It is a single shorter support.

Either the hull is different in that area (Because above water they are very very similar)
The angle of the engine and shaft are different
Or there is some other aspect that I am not aware of.

I can do that. I presume the electrical plans are what you are interested in?

Yes, but the plans and blueprints and others would also be great. I have the Perkins engine and Jefferson owners manuals but that's all.
Please let me know what is costs and I'll Paypal or whatever you for it. I really appreciate it as it's been a real struggle without the info.
Thanks again

Thanks Dan & Dhays,
Am I correct that the zinc go in for bolts labeled 39 (each end of heat exchanger end caps) & 8 (left and right lower corners on side)?
Thanks
