Imagine it's just before dawn. The anchorage is completely quiet. Even the birds are not awake yet.

You are sitting in the cockpit having a cup of coffee watching this beautiful world come to life. The temperature is a balmy 66F and the sky is clear.

Welcome to the Sea of Cortez. This is retired life in Mexico.

Nice, congratulations on a life well spent.

That looks like Caleta Partida, one of our favorite anchorages. Congratulations Kevin on making it down there. Enjoy the turtles.

Cheers, Bill

Today we are in the northernmost anchorage on Isla Partida :)

That looks like Doug’s boat in the distance?

Really glad you are enjoying it as expected.

Yep, Doug is here as well, we are buddy boating around

Life is a bitch, but if somebody has to do it, it might as well be you.
Hope you can survive !
Enjoy !

Desert boating, eh?

I heard a rumor that there are Scallops in the area so I decided to go looking.

From the sea comes food

The last photo is a dorado fish-ball mexican soup that Vicky made

Nice! We might cross anchor rodes with you tomorrow.

Enjoy!

We are in the soputhern arm of the gigantic bat at the north end of the island. Easy peasy on AIS.

Doug is here as well.

Vesselfinder still shows you AIS position as LaPaz, 31 Dec.

Oh are you in for a treat Kevin, the anchorage’s only get better going north!
Enjoy

Thanks John, Yes we are just learning the area. The islands are close, and represent a nice introduction to the Sea of cortez.

Enjoyed your posts as you contemplated and started your journey. For now while we search for our sea going home, we can at least live vicariously through cruisers like you. Muchos gracias! Fond memories of Mexico in my young sailor days...

South end of Isla Partida this morning...

Can you say succulent oysters and nice big fat ones. Don’t bite the black Pearl.

On another more topically geographic and historic note my old friend Capt. Harold Huycke wrote a wonderful novel years ago based on the Sea of Cortez during the period around WWI . The title is To Sanata Rosalia and Back. This was an event where Germans, who during this war were very close to the Mexican government, sent seven square rigged barques to the Sea of Cortez between Santa Rosalia and Guaymas to mine guano from the islands. They needed the salt Peter from the Guano to make black powder. Anyway the war ended and these sailors were abandoned and essentially forgot about. The ships basically fell apart from lack of care and sunk and the sailors had to fend for themselves for six years. Imagine looking at these islands and shore and what these men endured back then.

I have been cruising the Sea of Cortez for 12 years most recently in Loreto. Great weather.

Sounds great except for 2 things. The coffee and the before dawn thing…
