Hey all,
I’m retiring in a few years and will be doing the Loop and the Bahamas etc.
I’m looking at a 1978 Marine Trader 40. I know very little about these boats, but I like the lines. This particular boat is on the hard in NC and needs some tlc. I’m going to go have a look.
Are these boats good coastal cruisers? Are they blue water capable? Any info would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard. As to MT's...Almost any boat can be cruised IF you keep a sharp eye on the weather. I wouldn't consider MT's to be blue water capable.
Is there a listing of that vessel anywhere? Pictures will generate more comments from members than just year and model.
MOST important when looking at ANY boat is do your research on that particular brand and get a GOOD marine survey (hull and machinery). Even with a good survey you will discover some things that have been missed. Hopefully nothing too $$$$. There's TLC and there's TLC.
There are many threads here on TF discussing Taiwanese builds and their potential shortcomings BUT each individual boat will be in a specific condition dependent on her maintenance. Enjoy.

I have a few years before I head out, so I’m able and willing to put in sweat equity. This assuming the bones are good. I would definitely be getting a thorough survey. I would say my budget is $30,000- $60,000.
