On most trawlers that use paravanes there is a mast that extends well above the tips of the poles when they are lowered. Under way, the cable tension produces a large downward thrust on that mast. I don't see any reason why the mast height should extend higher than the height of the poles when lowered. Then the tension on one line is transferred to the other pole and the mast is not under compression. The mast is just an encoring point. That is how I have had my paravanes rigged for the past 14 years and have not understood why so many boats have those high masts.
