Preparing to add packing or re-pack both rudder shafts on 2004 Mainship 390. Shaft diameter is 1-1/2 inches. I haven't been able to remove the packing follower in order to measure the ID of the "stuffing box" due to very limited access. Is it safe to assume that I need 1/4 inch packing for this? Can anyone with this model year MS 390 verify the packing size? Also, any suggestions or recommended packing material for rudders would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Don’t know what size you need but I like Duramax packing.

Thank you Dave.....that looks like a good product.

I did my rudder shaft with PTFE packing 1/4"

I believe that is what Duramax is made out of. You can tighten Duramax down to where it doesn’t leak. There is a break in process that is simple to do. Basically leave it a bit loose and gradually tighten it up.
