Finally just after more than...4 year I just post one of the only photo we still have of our passage on Tangier

1984 anchored in Mochima Venezuela and the second one just after turn in the first bay at the entrance of Mochima. Poor quality because the film was damaged by heat and humidity

Re: Tangier!

Hi!
Thank you for sending us the pictures from your trip with Tangier.
Very interesting and so long ago.
Wishing you a nice weekend!
Orcas Island

The transom seems to be a similar style to a pickup truck.

An idea I always thought would be excellent, how does it work out?

Tangier

Hi ,

This is the first page of a leaflet of 4 pages, I have since summer 75.
TANGIER was in MARBELLA (SPAIN) moored in Puerto Banus from where we used to sail to AL HOCEIMA ( MOROCCO) , CEUTA (Spanish enclave in Morocco),GIBRALTAR.
I was a friend of the owner at that time. (Michel GUEGUEN)
I think these information will help and I will send more if needed.
I hope you will not be too much worried about my English.

I wish you a good sale and I will provide the new owner with the information I have got (see my previous post) if he wanted to.
I have real good "souvenir" about my short stay on board in 1975.
I will be really happy to see her back to her former glory and sailing again .

This old thread has popped up again, so I read it through. It brings to mind a sailboat that I and a partner put a bid in, when it was being sold 20 to 25 years ago, after a similar life. This boat had been neglected for a while, but before setting sail on a long voyage from India to BC, the standing rigging was renewed and a few other safety issues were addressed, then it was loaded with a cargo of Hashish and set sail. The Drug squad were onto this method of shipment, and managed to get a transponder of some sort into one of the bales of Hash, so all they needed to do was show up in the desolate inlet on the west coast of Vancouver Island when the sailboat arrived and everything was seized. When I saw her, she was on stands on RCMP property on Annacis Island, new Westminster, where my partner and I had a look at her. there was a scum line all around the hull about 36" above the original waterline, or at least where the bottom paint ended, indicating the tonnage of her illicit cargo. This was a 73', full keeled ketch, probably not unlike the Tangier in that respect. The interior wasn't opened when we were there, but through the lexan hatches we could see that the interior was done up in 70's colours and tiles, so it looked like the only updating that had been done was the rigging. Our opinion on the cost to refurbish enough for resale and a modest profit influenced our bid, but someone else saw more value than we did, so it went to them. I always enjoy stories like Tangier. It is good to see one still around and maybe even saleable. Its owner wants to sell, so it may show up in TF Classifieds.

Re: TANGIER 73 ft Motorsailor!

HI,
this could be the same boat you were looking at.
It is now in Maryland in the Georgetown Yacht Basin in Maryland.
The current owner Tom my friend bought this boat about 17 years ago.
It has been in dry dock in Maryland for 15 years or so.
The owner Tom is currently living on it.

So if you are still interested, he is selling it for $ 2000.000.00. as it needs a complete overhaul.
Just wanted to let you know.
This is a good price.

Look in the forum under Trying to find this Motor Sailor. Many picture of the boat there.

Sorry but your price are not clear.
For the arrangement the former one was made in New Zeeland. the second owner made some little change, for example the saloon was painted in light creme , near white, also teak deck and change one part of the mizzen mast ( because exhaust gas pass inside of this mast).
But later I saw her for sale in magazine in 1994 and the arrangement was totally different varnished wood classic inside.
The length is 80' the only drawing on board was hull line.
After sold this boat Gueguen ( the second owner) built "La Dame Des Tropiques" 25 m alloy schooner, we meet him in 1991 in La Rochelle.
I don't know when the "door" on the transom was made , not during the owner ship of Gueguen.
In 1985 he thinking put her for sale in the range of 2.000.000 French Francs around 300000€. She already had some corrosion problem (small) in the black water tank...
May be you could contact us in MP, we never know we could made an offer she is all we don't like : draft around 2.7m, heavy 109T, single engine but if we could save her we will save one part of our younger years:lol:

Re: Please look under the classified for the price of the Motor Sailor! Thank you!

All the details of the boat are listed under the classified.
Please look there for the price.

TANGIER was built in Auckland (New Zeeland) in1973 and bought by Mr GUEGUEN in Genoa (Italy) in 1975. He bought her after the owner and his family sails from Auckland to Genoa where they were not able to continue their navigation all together.
The interior was then given a more modern look in term of decoration in a shipyard in Palma De Mallorca.
TANGIER was registered in Auckland at that time.
I have so good memories of my stay on TANGIER and particularly the feeling of security when navigating on her, something like "nothing can happened".
I was 23 years old at that time and I will be really happy to see her back to life.
To long-cours.62 : you will find attached the 4 pages of the leaflet done by Mr Gueguen before leaving Marbella to the Caribbean where he intended to charter her. I have also one snap showing Mr Gueguen sitting in the saloon.
I hope you will enjoy these informations .

I have the same one on board, because Mr Gueguen wanted to made some charter but finally he decide to don't do that.
If the actual owner could make some photo from inside, bilge, engine room, chain locker, lazaret, tanks, mast rigging etc... they will be welcomed :)

Because after near 40 year and may be 20 years without maintenance ...

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. Don't know how to get you some pictures, as the owner of Tangier has no internet on the boat, is a older gentleman.Thank you for sending the U-tube.
The price of 200K US is a fair price, he had paid 500K for the boat many years ago, when the dollar had a lot more value. Of course it needs an overhaul. The Gardner engine alone is worth a lot, they don't build them anymore, are so efficient.

Thank you for your interest.

The purpose of my registration to the forum (as I have explain on my first post)
was to be able to post information about the "TANGIER" and particularly the brochure who is full of valuable real informations. I still have some more snaps of the boat and Mr Gueguen sitting in the "carre" where in the background can be seen the plywood paneling covered in cream skaï (imitation leather) surrounding the windows.(can be added on the thread)
I am still in touch today with Mr GUEGUEN family and maybe be able to get some more information if their memory can do it (that was 47 years ago)
Mr Gueguen , before buying TANGIER, was the owner of a company named CGTI . This company was involved in the International Telecommunications explaining why "TANGIER" was well fitted with communications equipment as well facsimile méteo (forecast)

Saying that, you will not see me around but I will love to know the future of "TANGIER" and I hope I will be kept posted about his were about.( long.cours.62 & OrcasIsland) Thanks in advance and bye for now.

Re: Motor Sailor "Tangier" for Sale!

Thank you for all your information about "Tangier".

This boat has a very rich history. Hopefully a new owner will appreciate all this.

Thank you for sharing all this!

As a neighbor and friend of the owner of Tangier, it has been fascinating to read about the boat's rich history in this forum. It is understandable why our friend is so passionate about his boat. Unfortunately, changes in circumstances in his life have meant he has not fulfilled his dream to restore the boat to its former glory. The boat is for sale, and will soon have to leave its current 'dry harbor'. The marina has been sold and the new owners will no longer allow the boat to be stored there while it is being worked on. If you happen to be near the Georgetown Yacht Basin in Maryland, before the end of April, stop by and shoot the breeze with Tom. You'll find him there, working and he loves to talk about his boat.

Still in Georgetown Marina

Saw her today, July 4, 2023. Looking quite rough, I'm sorry to say.

As you say , she is still alive !!
I am happy to see her again as she was supposed to be move from the marina where she is stored.
My dream of having her restored (rebuilt) is based on myself becoming rich in a near future and her not to be scrapped before that:)
So my dream is still alive...
Anyway, Is there any news regarding her future ?

Just happened to review this thread again, and I'm totally confused about what the price is...

"he is selling it for $ 2000.000.00"

"he thinking put her for sale in the range of 2.000.000 French Francs around 300000€"

So from what I can figure, he is asking either two thousand dollars, two million dollars, or three hundred twenty six thousand dollars.

What do you guys think he should list it for???

Seems to me that its clear enough in post #44.

If you read carefully the 2000000 french franc was in 1984/85 no more FF since 20 year ago :)

Concerning the actual value... Only People with verry confortable vallet coulb be interrested, not for tve actual value of Tangier but for the cost to rebuilt her !
Or dreamer who let her on hard stand for year.
Near forty year ago the Black water tank had already some trouble, In engine room we can't s'en and clean the bilge (front of the engine) because fill un with ballast.Engine don't rue during décade, the steel mast could be balle rusty (one part of the mezzanine one must replace before 10 year old, condition now ?) A Nice refurbishment was donc in Amel boatyard some here between 1985 to 1994 but since that bad story.
The cost to rebuilt her, the actual value ? A 42m teel schooner with ago the schooner "Blue Clipper"was sold for 250000€ in good condition.
The actual owner ask for 200k$ he will get this amount only if à rich People fall in love with Tangier: l'amour est aveugle

My dad owned this boat

Can anyone provide an update on this boat?
My dad Walter purchased the boat in 1998 and sold it in the early 2000s. My dad was a very successful porn producer in the 80s/90s. I asked him for his history with the boat and this is what I gathered:

It was refitted in Northern Holland by an American drug runner. I believe someone in this thread posted a link to an article in The NY Times about said drug lord. This guy put over a million dollars into rebuilding it and the inside was fit with precious woods. It was beautiful. He then brought it to the US and got busted and the DEA seized the boat. It had been for sale and my dad looked at it but it was over $1m. He thought about it but then moved our family to Brazil and forgot about it. 3ish years later his broker David called him from Miami and said the Tangier went to federal auction. So my dad flew into the USA and he can’t quite remember how much he bought it for but maybe around $300k. He had to refit it in Miami because it was at dock for a long time. He stayed in miami for a few months working on it, and then he sailed the boat down to Venezuela. He continued to do extensive work on it in Venezuela and this is when he painted it blue, which you see is still is the color of it today (if it wasn’t scrapped, yikes).

Trinidad was our home port. We sailed around the southern Caribbean. My dad owned a few business’ in Brazil at this time, I believe distributing pornographic tapes and sex toys, and it paid for us to stay out at sea for long periods of time. When my parents separated, my mom moved my sisters and I onto the Tangier and we hired a British captain and sailed around for months. She told me she moved us on the boat because she thought “when am I ever going to be able to do something like this again?” It was just my mom, her three daughters, and the captain. I remember very little as I was so young, but there is a story about how I fell off the side of the Tangier when I was a small child and no one saw me except a random man at a far away dock who had just run down to his boat to grab his wallet he had forgotten earlier. He began to wail “man overboard.” Had he not forgotten his wallet, I would’ve been dead. It was a true miracle. Anyways, I hope the boat wasnt scrapped, but it looks rough. If I won the lottery, I’d buy it, restore it, and sail it down to Brazil where my dad still lives today. He was quite sad to see it’s current condition. He loved it dearly!

Here are the only two photos I’ve found (so far) of the Tangier when we were the owners. Those are my two older sisters and me.

Nice to se some picture of Tangier and as said in my previous post and as you say, winning the French Lottery and having her back to France then after a full refurbishment I will use it as my second home moored on a Mediterranean sea marina.

Hi!

The new owner Tom is under great distress. The marina was sold
1 year ago and they want the boat out of the boat.
Tom has been working on the rudder all by himself the last
2 summers, but has not succeeded.
So sad, that the new owners of the marina are not helping
Tom to save the boat, he had it there for almost 20 years
and always paid the storage on time.
Ths situation needs a miracle.
Thank you!
OrcasIsland (a friend of Tom)

Perhaps donate it to a school like Mass maritime or even the naval academy. At least he’d get a tax credit and the boat would be restored and used as a training vessel.

I’ve sailed stay sail schooners but never a staysail ketch. The pictures of the rig are of interest to me. Can anyone comment on the pluses and minuses of her rig?

As wrotte buy some People, the miracle will be won at lotery :) Even if we found à customer for our actual at ther asking price ut will not be enough to rebuilt her.
After all this year engine , as you wrotte ruder and at les radar and windlass probabely don't work any more.
The "good" new : she is not yet scraper.

Re: TANGIER

Hi!

Thank you for your reply.
Tom wants to save the boat for himself, as this has been
his dream.

Needs help of someone, who has interest in fixing it up
and sail again. If you know of someone, please let us know, as the new owners of the marina does not want the boat there anymore as of
may 1st ot this year. As there are problems with the rudder, it could not be put into the water.
He might even sell it, if everything fails.

Thank you!
