If you want to read about the early, pre-1400, development of longitude and latitude positioning using lunar observations pick up a copy of "1434" by Gavin Menzies. Much research is discussed into the contribution of Toscanelli, Alberti, and Regiomontanusee. These early mathematicians shook up the Greek "flat earth" and the earth is at the center of the universe crowd.

You might also look at "Beyond the Blue Horizon" by Brian Fagen. An archeologist at UC Santa Barbara, Fagen is the author of many books, including The Cruisers Guide to Southern California. He explores how early men were able to find and explore unseen lands.
