For those interested, Steve & Linda Dashew's Weather Tactics book is free. It's a 600 page tome that would take a lifetime to absorb. But is an amazing resource on interpreting weather products. It's pretty old, but many of the principles remain. Dashew credits Lee Chesneau with the section describing 500mb use and interpretation.

I wish I had better focus and persistance as I struggle to digest this type of material. Consequently, my weather skills for passage making rank a C+ at best which is fine since I don't venture more than 3-days forward. AKDoug's trip from La Paz to Alaska was a good example of short-duration weather windows that improved while underway allowing him to continue longer distances, a luxury coastal passagemaking carries that ocean-crossing does not. This book is most useful for trans-ocean cruisers, but much to digest for someone like me too.

Got hammered one night near Loreto after depending too heavily on the ECMWF. Only the NAM forecast showed these winds.
