    Cummins 6 bta 5.9 330hp

In my Bayliner 4788 I get about 1.75 nmpg at 1250 RPM with a speed of around 7.5 knots. That is real life fuel burn from my 330 cummins That comes out to be abut 2.15 GPH from each engine.

Starlink raised their price to $150.00

Yea, I paid over $2,000 a month for my KVH VSAT service at 6 mbps. Statlink raising their price by $15 isn't even on my radar. But... cruisers will complain about the pressure of the free water on the dingy dock.

    Secrets and Tips

When cruising do not be in a hurry. If in doubt, stay in port. There are no prizes for getting your butt kicked in a big sea, but there are prizes for being the captain that stays in port during marginal weather.

Navigation software - what is currently good?

I have found that in Mexico the Navionics charts on my ipad are FAR more accurate than the Cmap chart chip I bought a bit over a year ago for my furuno nav sysatem

Isla Partida Baja California Sur Mexico

Here is the anchorage this morning. A bit of a breeze from the north. We will surf back to La Paz and catch the incoming tide. :) Margaritas at the Dock Cafe this evening.

    Securing furniture

I have some built in and some freestanding furniture. Many miles of open ocean under my keel and have not had a problem. Yes I have lost a coffee pot, and have had my counters cleared by wave action  But... That is my fault for not preparing.

    California taxes???

Like you I am a resident of Alaska, and like you I took my boat down the coast last year. As a bit of advice... Forget San Diego. Reserve a slip at Marina Coral in Ensenada MX. My opinion is that Marina coral is oner of the best run marinas I've had the pleasure of visiting. There you will...

    120vac and 240 vac splicing/junction

I do not have a problem with it at all as long as it's in a inaccessible location, to avoid inadvertent person contact.

    Air Conditioner VFD technology?

I'm going to look at the mini split units some more before I buy anything. We bought a inverter type top quality trane mini split for thew house here in Mexico last summer for $1200 USD installed. I have a full sized deep freeze on the flybridge. I could in that exact same protected space have...

    Another perfect day in Mexico!

Today is yet another perfect day in La Paz! Last night we watched the parade at the Carnaval, and today we are just relaxing. Having a Margarita at the marina restaurant, and doing nothing important at all.

Starlink Antenna - how are you mounting?

Just yesterday I disabled the motors on my starlink. The results were amazing. I went from about 60 mbps to 160 mbps immediately. I have no clue why. I am stable in a slip and I would have thought that the starlink would have optimized for speed. The modification was simple. I drilled a 1"...

    Life at Marina La Paz

In La Paz you are required to notify the port captain when you leave the port area, not when you move between marinas, or get diesel, etc... Since i have a permenant slip at Marina La Paz all i do is radio the marina that I am leaving doe a few days and they deal with the port captain by...

    Life at Marina La Paz

Yep, I certainly got it!!! 6 years in Whittier working week on week off. I loved it!!!! It was a sad day for me when GCI decided to de-staff the Submarine Fiber Optic system I maintained. But... I understand their reasoning.

How LOW can you go? (Voltages that is...)

I agree completely! Even in my cabin cruiser days I would install a separate house bank using golf cart batteries and then connect it to the engine battery using an ACR. My windlass is also on my house bank. I have found that if my bank is discharged it is MUCH better to start my generator...

How LOW can you go? (Voltages that is...)

Your problem is not running down your house bank. The problem is that you have your instruments tied to your start bank which when you turn the key has extremely low resistance circuit until your starter motor starts turning. This produces an incredible amount of current for a short period of...

How LOW can you go? (Voltages that is...)

Thanks!!! This is something folks just do not understand. It is perfectly normal for a FLA bank to be below 12V while in operation. At 50% discharge when I get up in the morning my Vaccuflush heads work. The water pump works. The electronics are still on. The inverter is working properly...

    Air Conditioner VFD technology?

I am very familiar with what we call a "mini split" AC system here in Mexico. Believe me I would LOVE to use them on my boat. Why??? because they work great, they are reasonably inexpensive, and there are a zillion tech's locally to service them. Here is the problem... The outdoor unit is...

How LOW can you go? (Voltages that is...)

The manufacture of my house bank crown publishes a battery voltage reference with load and for example 11.6 V is 50% discharged.

    Sea of Cortez

My opinion is you need a reliable anchoring system for the Sea of Cortez. That means a large anchor. Chain rode if your boat can support it. The last few nights are typical here. You will anchor and it will be picture perfect. Then in the middle of the night a strong wind will come up very...
