    Hurricane Norma, La Paz BCS

Just took a look... all good. No hull damage and bimini still in place!

    Hurricane Norma, La Paz BCS

What a night! The wind kicked up again shortly after midnight and blew in the 40+ range until about an hour ago. This time it came from the NW which sent the chop right into the Marina de La Paz fairway. About 2 AM, the boat in Kevin’s slip broke loose and started bashing into its neighbor...

    Hurricane Norma, La Paz BCS

We’re in Marina de La Paz and all is well so far. Still windy but nothing like this morning. Sustained winds around 50 really put the hurt on people. In MLP, it was difficult to move on the docks as the was significant motion but there is reasonable protection from fetch with good concrete...

    C-MAP data breach

As is typical with all these incidents, its impossible to determine if the breach was due to negligence/incompetence or something else. They say "we moved our C-MAP Apps data to a more secure server location, which we believe will provide even greater security" and "we applied additional...

    NMEA2000 to WiFi Adapters?

I have the Digital Yacht NavLink 2 and am using it with Navionics on an iPad. I'm currently only using it for depth but I'm sure AIS wouldn't be a problem as it seems like a quality device.

    New to me Sunnfjord

There are three fuel tanks: a 100 gal center tank and two 150 gal saddle tanks. The tank under the rear bed was a 300 gal water tank but after it failed the PO installed two 80 gal plastic tanks.

    New to me Sunnfjord

Mine has the same layout. Can you see my album here? You should see more photos from the factory and some grabbed from the YW listing.

    New to me Sunnfjord

Congrats on your new boat! I own a 1984 Sunnfjord 42 with a single 3208 NA. I have found the boat very sea kindly with a long flooded keel and large rudder. No thrusters so it's a joy to move around in a marina but I like the challenge :) I love the looks of the boat as it sits long and low...

Hilary comes to Baja! (Pacific Hurricane)

All good in the PE mooring field south of Loreto. We had sustained winds in the 40's with gusts into the 60's but otherwise no drama. Heavy rain at times but thankfully very little lightening. The temp has been a very pleasant low 80's the last day or so but the sun is starting to break...

Hilary comes to Baja! (Pacific Hurricane)

We're in the PE mooring field now. We had periods of heavy rain earlier today and I hear the road between the marina and Loreto Bay is washed out. I'd guess the winds are sustained in the upper 20s or lower 30s. Gusts are definitely into the lower 40s. Probably a real washing machine outside...

Changing out the sight tubes on fuel tank for remote tank/senders

McMaster-Carr has a nice selection of sight tube components here.

    Check those hose clamps!

Project Farm did some hose clamp testing. hose clamp testing I had no idea there were so many brands! Prices ranges from 20 cents (Meaxxna) to $8.75 (Mishimoto Gold) per clamp.

Removing a Cat 3208 TA from a GB 42 classic

Don't have info on the TA, but the Cat NA datasheet says it's 36" wide by 36.2" tall and a bit over 59" long with the marine gear attached. The diagram is a simple outline but it looks like that is with the manifolds attached. Also of note, mated with the TD506 it's 1980 lbs!

    Inverter Install basics

You can't go far wrong following MV Sanctuary and the fantastic discussion on that site. You can see his elegant solution here. I followed his plans and everything worked out great! My old boat was probably wired similarly to yours and I did not have to upgrade my panel. Btw, is there some...

What temps do your 3208s cruise at?

Our 3208 natural stays about 165 but we only cruise at 1500-1800 rpm. The only time I ever saw 180 was during the sea trial when we cruised a bit at 2300 (and threw a wake like a destroyer!).

I need some help and advice on Radar mast placement and radar operation

I was mostly summarizing my observations on this topic after making some Raymarine radar purchases over the years. The first 24" magnetron unit many years ago put out... I believe in the range of 2k watts. My 24" Quantum 2 unit I bought a few years ago only puts out 20 watts at max power. Of...

I need some help and advice on Radar mast placement and radar operation

If you can live without the rearward radar scan, you could mount it on the front of the flybridge. Seaview makes an adapter for their mast mount here but you could also have a bracket fabricated. There's no health risk as modern digital radars are very low power and can often be configured to...

How long should a Marine AC last?

Six years running 24/7 seems pretty good to me. I've had ten-plus years on a Dometic but that was only 24/7 in the summer. If I was to buy a new unit today, I'd seriously consider Flagship Marine. Their build quality and repairability looks great. Note they mention they still use heavy duty...

    Dingy davits

Also consider Kato davits. Very nice company to work with and high quality. A different design approach is something like The Dinghy Butler. Notice the Garhauer/Kato style davits lift and lower the dinghy vertically whereas the swing arm style davits like the Dinghy Butler move the dinghy in...

Starlink or Not......that is the question!!!

I get the nostalgia for simpler times: paper charts, etc. A less complicated life is what we recall from our youth. But dang, it sure is handy for all the reasons listed above. I probably watch too much YouTube as there's only so many times you can go outside and enjoy nature... especially...

lehman 120 what this wire for?

I'm curious about the placement on the elbow itself and wonder if this is still something that is available and recommended. The Borel and Aqualarm sensors both install on the rubber hose. At some level this makes sense as I would think the rubber hose temperature would increase much faster...

    Heading to Puerto Vallarta Mexico

We harbor hopped on the way down and had a great time. Perhaps our favorite stop was Monterey CA which we liked so much we wound up staying three weeks! The city marina is well run and right downtown so it's easy to walk to all kinds of restaurants, brew pubs, and the famous aquarium. Trader...

    South Pacific Mayday

On the EPIRB front, I just had to buy a new one and found out you can now get a version that also transmits and AIS signal. This seems like a terrific way to allow boats within receiving range to locate the device once in the vicinity. Here is the ACR device.

    Rare Electrical alternators

A previous boat had a Powerline 100 amp alternator still going strong after 18 years. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. See here.

    Rocna Vulcan problems

I've had a Rocna Vulcan for years in both the PNW and Mexico. For me, it performed extremely well. On sand it sets very quickly so I too think it might be related to technique. I typically lower the anchor slowly while paying out chain. If the wind is blowing, I just let it push the boat...
