To heck with J's, all for the Hood

Actually the Palm 55 is a better boat for the PNW and coastal BC - hard bimini - rain.

To heck with J's, all for the Hood

Yeah, Yeah, I know there's lots of wood on this boat and that's why I love it. That plus the beautiful classic lines. I'll leave the J boats to the young and foolish, might spill the drink, you know!

Your circumnavigation of Van Island sounds great. When you started out, Nanaimo to Richmond I was thinking - what to heck? Then realized you were bouncing over to Victoria from the land of many Chinese restaurants. I love living on the Island, but.................. the quality of Asian...

    All electric galley

Along time ago, I read about that fuel cell. Might be alternative to a generator??? I have an Efoy on my boat. There are three sizes, 80/140/210, the higher the number the more the amps put out. I have never read complaints about the product. In fact, I set out to buy a used one and my search...

    Anchoring a Ranger 29

Look up springing the rode, sailors often know this, So looking at the diagram in the article, the boat is placed at roughly the same angle as the Pardy's use to set their sailboat in a storm with a sea anchor off the bow and rigged to set the sailboat at an angle. This is how they rode out...

    Stabilizing with trim flaps.

I have a new Merc engine with a new Bravo 2 leg. Also installed are two new electric trim tabs. I do use the leg trim and find it effective. I have yet to figure out what to use the electric trim tabs for. Having said that, my boat at low speed suffers from wandering. Turns out this is a...

    Propane usage

As part of my refit, I considered going with aluminum or fiberglass propane tanks. First aluminum propane tanks and rusting. This is a non-issue if you get your propane from places that do bottle exchanges. Highly recommend this as you no longer have to worry about rusting bottles. Fiberglass...

    Poll: Anchor vs. Marinas

Sheesh. Just call me a day sailor. If you are on your boat and enjoying it, that counts. He who boats the most in a year wins the trophy for best value to dollar in the boat award.

    New from Vancouver Island

Well that will be handy for all the good stuff, Desolation, Discovery and Broughtons. They also have a decent chandlery there which surprisingly Courtney/Comox does not.

Vancouver International Boat show - virtual

Yeah I thought that question was kind of dumb. Since my boat is in a marina I answered "marina boater." But what if you live in Deep Cove in North Van and you are lucky enough to have a jetty on your property, then what are you?

The tug line of boats are a great PNW, coastal BC and Alaska cruising vessel. I tend to stay away from the southern area of Desolation Sound in the summer just because of the crowds. Although I think this summer will still be closed off to Americans so the area may not be as crowded as a...

    Anchor shopping

I agree with the above post. Anchors are divided into traditional and modern. Just about any modern will beat a traditional. Now having said that, something like a fortress will set up better in a sand bottom than a Rocna, but the Rocna will work over a wider range of ocean bottoms. I'm not...

    Poll: Anchor vs. Marinas

Two pages already .... What’s the purpose of this thread? What can be gained from this info .... ? Eric, I put forward the idea as I really don't know much about the east coast boating scene, and yes I know it is multi-scenes, not just one. My stereotype view is that the east coasters are...

Just how deep is the hole?

When I first moved my new to me Catalina 27 sailboat into my home marina at Sewell's in West Vancouver, an older lady came out on her cruiser tied up next to me. We did the usual chit chat talk and during this time I said the old "a boat is a hole in which to throw money." She said "Young man...

Vancouver International Boat show - virtual

Much like the Seattle boat show, the Vancouver boat show will be virtual this year. Since we are more socialistic than down south, our boat show is free to register.... lol. :whistling: If you are newer to boating, looking for a new boat, or want to upgrade skills, I can recommend the...

Looks great. I see you have many hundreds of feet of line on a reel for stern tying, you're ready for Desolation Sound... lol. What is the box under the swim grid?

So who loves sleeping on your boat in a gale force wind?

NOrthern Spy, not much to see but this was me on my boat a couple of months ago in a decent blow at Comox Valley marina. Sound up: https://www.facebook.com/rick.nicholson.14/videos/10224416100212070 Had one of my best sleeps that night.

Can someone set up a poll? Time at anchorage

How do us Great Lakes folks respond? Good grief, I was tempted to say in English, but I didn't. Since no one is doing the poll its appears to be a mute point, however if it does get done those living in Australia, New Zealand, Antartica, the Artic, et. al. could be"Part C - The rest of the world."

    Trawler builder forum for Mariner?

You had me all excited. I own a Mariner built in Vancouver. There were a number built but I believe only a few remaining. I have been trying to get a history on the Mariners built in BC but not much luck so far. I think the another Mariner brand was/is also built in Australia.

Can someone set up a poll? Time at anchorage

Yes it does leave out 7/8th's of the world, or maybe 6.9814/8.33519 of the world, not sure. But it makes the polling set up easier and it reflects the reality of the TF, mostly but not only North America. And it has my agenda, to see how much east coasters are actually on the hook.

Can someone set up a poll? Time at anchorage

I am really curious as to what is the ratio of "on the hook" versus marinas for both coasts. I'm not sure how to set up a poll but hoping some one else can. It would be nice to see the answer at a glance rather than reading through numerous threads. So the poll would be in two parts. Part A -...

    All electric galley

I would like to know the real world numbers on that Breville oven. If a chicken roasts for an hour and 15 minutes, what is the total amp hour draw from the battery bank (also taking into account the use of an inverter). Is the oven element working 20% of the time or 50%? I have a dual set up...
