Advice on new boat buy please/ underpropped?

Dear AusCan - I don't think the CBB 34 has a semi-displacement hull. I have a similar Fu Hwa 35 and is certainly not semi but is full displacement. It would take some significant HP to get this boat on plane.

I have an 1981 PT 38 Trawler, 2" shaft, Perkins 185 aspirated, turbo,

I ordered the sliding door lock from an outfit in the UK. LocksOnline.co.uk. They supply to boats like ours under the name The Old Customs House, The Docks, Milford Marina Milford Haven SA73 3AA. It is a Union 2401 Sliding Door Lock , Model 9016. Ask for extra keys. I paid 153.26 pounds for it...

A trawler for experienced sailing cruisers

On our 35' Fu Hwa, the salon and the aft cabin have headroom in excess of 6 feet. Most CHBs that I have seen have an access door in the rear of the aft cabin and only one door in the salon. That aft door takes up space. We enter and exit our vessel from either the swim platform or one of the...

    Perkins T6.354 Oil Change Question

Oil Filter for Perkins 6.354 Get the Napa Model # 1459. It has an incorporated check valve so your oil will not drain out when you remove it. I am also surprised that you don't have that pump to remove the oil. I was under the impression all of those Perkins engines were equipped with them. Did...

    Lost amp meters

I went through the boat document file that the PO had left. The original wiring diagrams were provided by the ship builder Fu Hwa Boating Company LTD of Taiwan. It shows the am meter connection to a shunt. The shunt is missing but is shown in the diagram with the positive to the daisy-wired...

Holding Tank, specifically in a CHB 34' twin cabin

I have used the schedule 80 grey PVC pipe in combination with the schedule 40 white PVC fittings. Both pipes can be bent with a heat gun. Just don't overheat the spot where you need to bend. It has worked just great for the last 12 years particularly for the long runs. I convert to the flex...

    Lost amp meters

Dear High Wire - to follow up on his question, the 'band' that he referring to is a current transformer (CT) isn't it? That is also called a donut by some electricians. Some are split so that one does not need to disconnect the cable. It turns out the amp meter on my boat is not even connected...

Adding city water inlet to CHB 34

Our vessel came with a device similar to the one psneeld shows in his picture. We always turn the water off when not on board and have had no problems whatever for almost 20 years. Remember that if relying on onboard tankage that your pressure pump will be cycling which can be very annoying.

Simrad MFD - course and heading do not align.

I had the same problem suddenly with my Simrad system. Then I realized that I had just placed my rechargable drill and impact driver next to the compass. Once removed, the system cleared up and we went on our way.

Question about flying the US flag

It is a myth that Canadians are better liked than Americans. There are few Canadians in the world to begin with and according to most travel publications they behave worse than anyone else. They even beat the Germans with their bad manners. Canadians are viewed with more gratitude in the...

    propane tank re-fill

Sports Basement and others sell refillable 1lb propane bottles. The regular green bottles are not refillable per DOT regulations. You can buy a refill attachment on Amazon to fill from the 5lb bottle. Very easy and safe.

Pilot II Low Voltage at Helm

Voltage problems I had the same problem with my VHF and plotter conking out intermittently. I decided to run a new, dedicated lead from the breaker to the VHF radios and the plotter on the bridge. It solved my problems.

    Charging House Bank While Underway

Low Idle Alternator Output I had a stock 90 Amp Motorola alternator on our Perkins 6.354 driven vessel with an internal regulator. My house banks were always depleted after a day's cruise. Before getting the external regulator from Wakespeed installed I was advised to get the alternator...

    Discover MS Passi

    34DC fuel tank replacement. Tanks?

I am not sure whether we have a similar situation but my starboard tank was leaking profusely when I filled it up once. I had to have the bilge pumped out and paid a fortune because the diesel was then considered hazardous waste. Never mind that the boat yard sold it anyway from the "hazardous...

Smelly Boat? - One more place to look!

The PO had cut a hole in the bilge floor to access the water in the keel. He had the drip from the stuffing box drain into the keel and had installed a sump pump. This has worked quite well so I surmise he was ahead of his time.

    $24 pump out? What?

It is free at most Sacramento Delta marinas. But, we pay for it indirectly through our diesel and gasoline prices which seems equitable. There is a mobile service out of Stockton that charges from $50 to $100 depending on the season and holidays. They do a brisk business. Ironically, they get to...

Yacht transport ship in trouble off Norway

The owner of the ship reported on the Dutch news (RTL) that a large brand new fishing vessel went overboard after it broke al of its tie down cables. He also mentioned that the dockworkers that were to have secured the cargo below decks likely messed up which caused the shift and the subsequent...

Does parking come free with your moorage payment?

Parking is free behind a locked gate at the B&W Marina in the Sacramento Delta. If we were to stay away for a longer period we are asked to park our car in a less crowded area. Very nice and accommodating owners indeed.

We made it! We finally splashed!

    Water Injection

As a mechanic in the US Air Force, I recall getting instructions on the after burner concept used on B-52 engines. I recall that they injected a combination of jet fuel and water in the last stages of the turbines to increase gaseous volume thereby increasing thrust. These airplanes spewed a lot...

    Boat arch

Just make sure not to cut the radar cable and try to splice it. I tried that with my Furuno system to no avail and ended up buying and installing a new cable. A real pita.
