C12s: Any proven disadvantage of continuous low engine rpm?

Continous Low RPM Our Albin 43 had twin Cummings 6BT5.9M engines. I thought I ran it up often enough, but one time I found that both turbos had frozen up. Worked them loose, then ran the engine at higher RPMs longer and more often. No more turbo problems.

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

REF Post 135 The engines and transmissions that were installed in my 43' Albin had the engines and transmissions exactly as stated in Post #135 of this thread. I still have all the manuals and specification sheets for the boat - that is where I got the data for the post from. While the boat was...

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

Cummins 6BT5.9M engines with Velvet Drive 71CR Transmissions 'Lo All! My old 43' Albin trawler had Cummins 6BT5.9M engines and Borg Warner Velvet Drive 10-17-00-012 AS14-71CR transmissions with 2.57:1 ratios in BOTH forward and reverse. The boat also had a Glendinning engine synchronizer which...

    DIY Saloon Headliner Installation

"Waterproofing" Masonite Hi, When I was about 7 yrs old, I saw designs for a surfboard sailboat in a magazine (?Popular Mechanics?). I decided to build it and started construction on it, but my older brother usurped the project and dropped the sailboat part. It used 4 1"x4" boards for...

    Fuel Delivery Problems?

vacuum I really don't remember how much vacuum it could pull with the fuel tank valves closed, but it was whatever the fuel pump could pull. I installed the system much like Cap't Will's system that used a Walbro 6802 pump. I still have the diagram for the system. It was a perfect system for...

Jabsco 37010 "Quiet Flush" -- Recirculating water???!

Don't use Bleach to Sanitize The joker valve on many, if not all, marine toilets is susceptible to bleach as the chlorine attacks the rubber. The joker valve then is totally useless as it swells and contorts, necessitating replacement.

    Fuel Delivery Problems?

Vacuum vs Pressure on Fuel Lines On the Celestial, I had a fuel manifold somewhat like yours. The valves weaped fuel slowly and left a stain. I changed all the valves out with ball valves from a big box store and then had multiple air leaks under vacuum, but under pressure the valves were good...

Two questions re: refrigeration use when cruising & Novakool specific ?

NeverKool to NovaKool 'Lo All, On our Albin, Celestial, we had a NovaKool freezer/refrigerator that could not keep ice frozen on a hot Florida day, and the refer, when set to the coldest setting was barely cool. I installed two computer-type 12 V DC muffin fans to ventilate the area behind...

    Hole in hull under engine

'Lo All, I had a similar circumstance on my old sailboat. I put a bilge pump onto a flat spot on the bilge where the keel extended down about 4-5' below the bilge. The boat had actually been out of the water for several months. When I drilled holes to put in screws to secure it to the bilge, I...

When Does it Become Cost Prohibited?

'Lo All, I went from a 36' wooden sportsfisherman to a 46' sloop rigged sailboat, then a 43' trawler and now to a 22' cuddy cabin with a 200 hp outboard. I also still have a 14' sailboat. The 36' sportsfisherman was really a 1958 35' Owens, with an extra foot added in the saloon and an added...

Make it Easy to Trace Wires, Especially in a Bundle When trying to trace wires, especially in a long wire bundle, a Tone Tracer will be a great help. Many are available, such as...

    Sub sighting!

My Two Nuc Sub Experiences About 30 years ago, we were headed to Panama City, FL from New Jersey in our old 46' sailboat. We tried to go into a marina on Charleston Harbor, but the tide was too low as the boat drew 6.6'. So we went out and milled around well out of the ship channel, but still...

    The Last Great Race

Memories! I lived just outside of Anchorage in a trailer park named "City of Tomorrow" (I think it was) or was it Mobile City of Tomorrow - not sure - on Boniface Road from '62-'66. My full-time job was USAF, but worked part-time on small airplanes with a guy - Charlie Cannon - who, with his...

    We got waked...

'Lo All, Two stories: 1. Once, when I still owned the 46' sailboat, I was in St. Andrews Bay, which is a deep and very wide bay for the most part, when a US Navy landing craft air cushion (LCAC) came up along side me, then made a 90 degree turn away from me. For those unfamiliar with these...

    simple scuba setup for emergency.

'Lo All, Two Things: 1. Most of this was alluded to, but may not have been explained. DO NOT use an oil-lubricated compressor or a hose that has EVER been used on one for a hookah unit, as oil from the compressor can get into the lungs and cause a person to experience suffocation. I'm told...

Recreational Boating & the Green Movement

'Lo All, I remember this same exact discussion in High School - late '50s. Some things take a LONG time to change, and that, I believe, comes about as a result of economics for the most part.

Chasing air in fuel line two years

Chasing Air in Fuel Lines for Two Years 'Lo All, After installing a fuel polisher on my '86 Albin 43' Sundeck Trawler, I chased air leaks for a long, long time. To make a very long story short, I found that when under vacuum the ball valves that I had purchased from a Big Box store leaked air...

Help. PO used 3M5200 to reseal leaking windows

'Lo All again, Another use for Debond is to free stuck-on exhaust hoses. May work on other hoses as well, but did a good job for me on the Celestial's exhaust hoses when I had to repair the mufflers. Hoses were sort of vulcanized onto the SS muffler tubes. Wedging a screwdriver up along side...

Help. PO used 3M5200 to reseal leaking windows

'Lo all, 3M 5200 is only a fair adhesive/sealant on some substances, such as glass. It failed miserably on gluing/sealing the glass prisms into the holder on our old sailboat. I ended up using something from Bostik. I forget what it was called. That worked well. I also tried a Sika product that...

A first day of fall question for you...

    Fuel tank crossover line question

'Lo All, Shortly after we purchased the Celestial, a 43' 1986 Albin Sundeck trawler w/ twin Cummins 6BT5.9M engines, I had to redo the fuel system plumbing as the old copper lines showed signs of work-hardening due to vibration and not being properly supported, the valve stems were always damp...

Any One Else Have This "Problem"? Trawler Owner

Phil Enscoe - Our Albin 43 had leaks around the windows and into the chain locker when we bought her. I fixed the window leaks by installing new SS window channels, both for the fixed and sliding portions. (Upper tracks were OK.) I used toothpicks to fill the old screw holes and epoxied them...

    Lightning

Transaxial - We have a lightning/surge protector installed between our house's meter base and the incoming supply line. Knock on wood, we have never had a surge come into the house. SS AC strainer 2 weeks old - Rusted???
