    10-12 knot cruise trawler 26-32'?

You should take a look at a Bayliner 32XX. They are good, spacious, solid boats that came in both dual gas and dual diesel configurations with a flybridge. Heaps of them out this way and many in great shape with new tanks and newer power plants. They will meet your speed requirements.

Woody owner advise needed - hull

I don't think it is a problem, but like you, I would do it and in fact did do it. When I repowered my 1965 TollyCraft Voyager which had a plywood hull covered in glass, I cleaned, primed and painted the entire bilge myself. I live 120 miles each way from my boat and did the work on weekends and...

Advice on Golf Cart Battery Brands

My family pounds on our house bank (a mere two 6 volts) every weekend from May to October. We stay out Friday to Sunday, sometimes Monday on two six volts. We run the stereo, my daughter opens the fridge and stares inside (slowly), movies are watched on our 12 volt TV/DVD combo, and lights, (led...

Tariff affect on PNW boat building.

"Does America get a say or can he so decide, and act accordingly?" America had a say during the presidential election. Trump ran on these ideas and was not bashful about it. No matter what one may think about such things, Americans had their say in 2016.

    Portable generator for charging

As to noise, from 50 feet away, the sound of my generator while on full load is de minimis as observed by folks who were not with me nor benefiting from my genny. I agree that everyone should be a courteous boater at all times.

    Portable generator for charging

I bought and have used the Westinghouse. The reviews sold me. Starts on first pull since day 1. Nothing bad to say. Picked it up at Lowes

    Rustoleum for Topside Paint?

Rustoleum is a good product, it is readily available and it is at a good price point. I would use it without hesitation, especially since what you will be doing you will be redoing from time to time. Go for it. They also have some good primers that will work well, even for spot applications. I...

having trouble with back and fill

I agree with Ted, upon return when "warmed up" as captain, I would back her in despite the challenges. Not to be a wise guy, but have you sought to change slips? After I repowered my boat, she prop walked in the opposite direction she formerly had, and rather than fight, I switched slips. If you...

What is the logic using 6v batteries in series

I use these: https://www.batteriesplus.com/replacement/battery/trojan/t105/sligc145ut 255 AH and about 10 pounds heavier than the Trojan 105. Not cheap, but there is always a coupon available knocking $20 off the price. I previously used the Interstate 6V from Costco. No complaints either way...

Ohh boy, didn't you go through a Tolly and the Willard in the last two years? Well, change is good.

    Battery Charger

And a 10/10/10 amp charger may work fine, as your alternator should keep up with the start batteries while underway (supposing the start batteries are isolated from the house and not used during anchoring) and a smart charging 10/10/10 will usually put much of the full 30 amps to the bank most...

    South Puget Sound

Avoid south sound at all costs. Reports of pirates off Devil's Head are circulating. Ok, just trying to keep it all to myself. It is quiet, uncrowded and rural with great scenery. Just don't tell anyone else.

    LEDs

My boat has the original 50 year old fixtures and I was in no mood to rewire and replace, yet the old style bulbs ate battery power and generated enough heat that it concerned me. Took a bulb out and walked into a store in Portland OR and they sold me Source LED warm white replacements. They...

"What’s Really Wrong with Yacht Clubs"

I am not surprised at Matt's experience in the Tacoma area. We have a group of friends (made through boating) with boats in South Puget Sound and we are generally out at one of the numerous state marine parks each weekend from May through October. Our common experience is that the yacht club...

How much do you run your genset in PNW?

FlyWright nailed it. The Coleman drip coffee maker is our choice. Could use an insulated carafe, but this little beast does not use a ton of propane.

    Top 3 Trawler builds?

I found the OP's rejoinder witty. No one forces anyone to read or respond to a forum post. We choose to "waste" our time here.

Economy and well built trawler, tight budget....

bshillam: Just out of curiosity, if you run the tolly with the tide/current at 6-7 knots to Sucia, what do average for fuel burn? Around 2-3 nmpg?

    Kilz primer

The oil and shellac primers do a better job of sealing tannins but can take a coat or two. Since it dries fast even in a damp area, that is no hardship. I am finding after many years of being around coatings that solvents bother me more, therefore I use water based when I can. Now as for using...

    Kilz primer

More than a few "old timers" have trouble accepting new products and this is not always based upon rationality or experience; sometimes is just stubbornness. My wooden boat lives in the water and I frequently use Kilz 2 or BIN on projects. Never a problem with it.

    Hi Amp Alternators

I say just go try spending the weekend. Your start batteries are likely isolated from the house batteries, so go enjoy a weekend and see how it goes, knowing you can always start the engines. My house set up is a mere 2 golf cart batteries and I stay out for 2 to 4 nights without a problem. You...

    Velvet drive questions

Dave: I had a similar event last year. Mine was just the line, not the pot too. The velvet drive survived and was fine once the line was removed. I was only going about 2-3 knots when it happened though. Hope the shaft and propeller are good. Lotsa pots out there and tasty dungeness crab too

How Bad are Older Salt Water Boats?

An additional consideration is whether it has been kept in a boathouse or covered moorage. Here in Puget Sound, you can walk the docks and look at 30-50 year old boats that never leave the drink and look fabulous because they under cover. I also believe the ambient air temperature has something...
