    Impeller replacement

In my Perkins / Jabsco raw water pumps, the thin delicate gasket is easily damaged or ruined by removing the cover plate. Even if the impeller is found to be intact, I now have to replace the gasket. I can buy complete replacement kits, but I only need the gasket if I decide not to replace...

    Need an Ice maker/refrigerator

I replaced a failed Dometic unit with one made by Sea Freeze, Inc Even though you are in CA, you might contact them b/c they build their own insulated boxes to fit the space needs you have, and then cool them with the typical Danfoss high effeciency compressors which are now the industry...

    Greetings from the Owen Churchill!

My trawler was made in the Cheermen yards around 1985. I looked them up on Google and the Cheermen yard is still in business, but not making boats. I found a placard in my electrical closet with the Cheermen label and the hull number. Take a look around and see if you can find such on...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

Up and running !! (and stopping !!) I ordered two relays, and the first one turned out to be bad. Bench testing showed no activation of pin 87 when voltage applied across pins 85 and 86. The second relay worked fine, on the bench and in the boat. Once installed, the relay did activate pin...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

Look what just arrived from British Parts Northwest (parts for Jaguars, Triumphs etc). Now down to the boat, and swap out. Fingers crossed. Thanks Turtle Blues. I will get one of these to keep on board as a spare. I had no idea where to purchase, so thanks for the part number. I...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

Circumnavigator: Great advice. I have a Fluke toner on board, and from time to time it saves the day. I don't want to wander off the original thread topic too much, but now that you bring up testing, I think it would help others following this thread to watch the video linked below showing...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

OK Barking Sands...are you Nostradamus or something? Just after your wrote this, I had to move the boat urgently b/c of extreme low tide, and when I re-docked in deeper water, the port engine would not stop !! First time ever !! I had to resort to using the trick of jumping 12V to the stop...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

After a whole day of tracing the wires from the instrument panel through the main harness to the engine, these are indeed relays. The Yellow-Red wire goes to the start relay, the other to the stop relay. Power to the Yellow-Red is activated from the instrument panel by the Start button...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

Here is photo of what I think are the Oil Pressure sensors, and they are on the opposite side of the engine. Note that there is a T-joint inserted into the engine block with what appears to be two separate sensors. I believe the second one (white wires) was added to service the former...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

Thanks.. I do not wish to remove them. They were put there for a purpose. I have tried to trace the wires. One wire (yellow-red in the photo) does arise from the harness coming down from the instrument panel (ignition and guages). As for the oil pressure sender, I can see those on...

    Perkins 6.354 Anatomy Question

38' trawler with twin Perkins 6.354 (circa 1985). Upgrading battery/charging system from FLA to AGMs and replacing alternators/voltage regulators. When tracing back the wiring harness from the current (Port) alternator, there are two red cans that look like relays attached to the engine...

High Freeboard, Short Handed - How To Grab A Mooring

I had one of these and it worked great, until it didn't :ermm: The rotatory mechanism froze and it grabbed onto the ring of the mooring ball, but would not complete the rotation and I was leaning over the bow, now holding onto the device which was stuck on the ring. I cannot remember how I...

microwave almost drove me into a piling!

Could you explain how to use a phone to survey for magnetic interference? Are your referring to using the Compass app built into most phones and watching for deviations as you move it about in the cabin?

    anchor bridle

Agree with above comments about the use and benefits of anchor bridles. I use this chain hook from UltraMarine: https://ultramarinewest.com/products/ultra-chain-grab Outfitted with dual ropes, it makes an excellent bridle, which has withstood some very windy conditions. Easy to deploy and...

where to start -- engine not getting fuel

Also check the cables from your battery to your starter motor. I had similar problem and it was a corroded cable and loose crimp on cable connector. Solved by replacing both cable and connectors.

    Hydraulic Autopilot

I was struck by your reply, so may I ask: I have a Garmin chart-plotter and radar (so far, very satisfied). I have a 6 port NMEA 2000 switch which provides some engine data to the Garmin nav display. I have a W-H Autopilot (a 1990's analog system....now out of business) and it appears the...

    How to determine your limits...

We all have limits, even the pro's. I bought my Trawler having never done any electrical or engine repairs. First thing I did was read, read, and read. I bought books (like Calders) from Amazon, and read the basics, which helped me enough to ask a reasonably intellegent question. The...

    Temporary Brightwork treatment

I thought I would add a few images illustrating the comparison of Teak Oil vs Semco on the same boat, under the same conditions. The photo on the left is a side window on the pilot house, prepped with teak cleaner gently applied with a fiber-backed (kitchen) scrub pad and then with 2 quick...

Boat house vs. custom (canvas) cover

KarenG: Congrats on the new boat...and we have at least 2 things in common. My boat is 1985 38' Hershine. And I live just south of you in Port Orchard, and lastly, just purchased a boathouse. To answer your questions, it all comes down to budget. But also consider that in WA state...

    Keeping RIB in the water?

Hmmm...now thats a temptation...but we are on the other coast....I did look into this davit and have seen quite a few installed in boats at the marinas I have visited. Looks like a good system. And we do use our shore boat a lot. So, yes, its in my future if I can swing the budget. Thanks.

    Keeping RIB in the water?

This may be 'off-topic' but I am considering mounting a RIB on my boat's swimstep, and the mounting systems for RIBs are quite a challenge.... May I ask....what davit are you going to install? Thanks
