When I was the navigator in a destroyer in the 1970s, we took several sextant angles of the sun during the morning hours and one right at local apparent noon. The mooring cuts were all advanced from their cut time by the ship's speed through the water to the LAN shot forming a fix at the ship's position at LAN. This along with fuel and water levels was reported to the captain.
