Following as well. When ours was surveyed, there was a spot halfway between engine and prop that was solid. No moisture was apparent. Possibly ballast? No movement of shaft observed. Searching for '79 GB 36 manual.

Look carefully at the flybridge controls and see if there is wear on a particular connection point. That would be my first choice. I would note the connection point that did not work.

I was just pointing out that even if they had surfaced the occupants of the submersible would not be able to open from the inside. Hence suffocating before rescuers could find them and open the hatch.

Apparently the occupants of the sub would be unable to open the main hatch as it is bolted on from the outside by 17 fasteners Loss of communication on decent would lead me to believe a breach of the hull.

What Ted said. I do not have the boat for ocean passages. Probably not going to happen at my age. Admire those that do.

RT said it. Maintenance is key. Currently repairing and replacing stuff that should have been attended to years ago. That said the boat still has good bones. The decks had been done and fuel tanks replaced.

I have a fondness for dark hulls.
