    Remove flybridge, add solar

I agree... I have to agree with the many, many others that said "keep the FB and build a solar bimini." Personally, I would never get rid of a FB, and to loose the whole upper deck too... it's not worth it. As for the amount of solar panels, I might be missing something in your description...

    In hull depth finder recommendation

Exaaaaactlyyyy. Great to hear! Good on ya!

    In hull depth finder recommendation

Inside depth finder, easy-peasy I hate any holes in a boat, so an inside depth finder is the only way to go. I've used it with old spinning arm depth finders, up to forward sweeping fish/depth finders and it works exactly the same as mounting in the hull. As long as the hull is solid...

    Flopper stoppers

Better late than never. Hoping I'm not too late to throw in my 2 cents. I'm probably the only guy around with outriggers & floppers on a little 28' flybridge, but I hate it when my drinks are spilled. I've been working for years with what I'll just call flopper-stoppers (but not necessarily...

    Water Maker or just tanks?

I'm looking at your boat pic on your post & thinking I might be a bit closer to you in application. To watermaker or not watermaker is one I wrestled with for a long time. I don't know of any <29' boats sporting watermakers, but that's not to say it's a bad idea. I have 2 30 gal. tanks. That's...

    Head first or feet first

Heads up! First of all, let me say that I hate V-berths. To the point where I took mine & covered that useless little notch-step, turned the berth athwartship & made the peak into storage. Absolutely love it. The reason? (Along with not being able to sleep close together.) If I sleep...

You're gonna lose a TON when you sell it...

It's more fun when it's free. I'm always bothered by that whole "Best two days..." thing. I'm on boat #5. Made money on all of them. It's all in the buying and not going crazy paying others for big ticket items. Best is ones that look like crap, but have good bones, solid engines or...

Removing AC power and going with DC power only.

I looked through the replies, but didn't see anyone talking about wire sizes. Keep in mind that 12v vs 120v means you'll need wiring that can handle 10x the amperage. That can get really bulky, very expensive, and hard to route. Personally, I'd keep the 120 & an inverter, a few hundred watts...

    simple scuba setup for emergency.

At the risk of... I'll probably take a lot of cr*& for this, but here's my take. If all you want is something to use in shallow depths, to do things like clearing a fowled prop or cleaning out a through-hull, etc.; and you don't want to screw with the cost, weight, the hydros/visuals, BC...

All Hell breaks out on simple trip to Catalina Island

Crossing from hell. Everybody has at least one. Your story was so inspirational, I just had to share. Just so you know you aren't the only one. We've made probably 40 trips to Catalina on our 30' flybridge (Bertram style) cruiser. One time, however, all the stars... misaligned. The plan...

    Vee vs Walk Around Berth

For what it's worth, I have (or had) a V-berth, but hate v-berths so changed it. The thing is, if you sleep head to the stern, the motion feet-first is weird and I always feel like I'm head down & sliding out. Can't go head forward because 2 heads & shoulders are just too cramped and my wife...

    Onboard exercise??

    Well put! So true.

    Onboard exercise??

Place the boat in gear at an idle. Then push your partner over the side and maintain a speed just fast enough he/she can't quite catch the boat. Continue 1 hour, then stop. Make sure your partner is not still pissed when he/she does the same to you.

    Weird weather?

Well, for what it's worth; Out here in southern CA we just had another summer with water temps well below normal at around 62-65 for most of the summer. Had a few weeks off & on that jumped up to 70'ish (the lower summer norm), but then right back down to low 60's or less. Also spent most of...

    Propane Gen...for an RV

Wow, so many thoughts an opinions. Agree with many, but had a few thoughts that I didn't see mentioned (best as I recall), so thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I'm all for a geni on boats AND RVs. Although, 80% of my needs can be handled by solar panels, sometines you just need POWER. The...

Repowering with hydrogen fuel cell electric drive.

Nailed it. GoneFarrell... WELL PUT! You totally nailed it! And didn't even get into the fact that it takes WAY more energy (and creates more pollution) to extract hydrogen, compress it, transport & store it; than just using that energy source to drive the vehicle/boat in the first place. Add...

    One Pound Propane Tank Refill

All good comments by previous members, but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I've refilled lots & lots of these little tanks. Use them for infrared heaters, torches & the boat BBQ. First off, a little info on their quirks. The tanks are strong, but the valves are cheap & go bad before the...

    Boat Towing - Ranger 31

...CONTINUED... So, yes, this is a fantastick truck for towing a boat like that. I would highly recommend it. I've towed this from San Diego, CA up as far as the Sacramento Delta over a 4200' pass in 100 degree temps and it just laughed at the grades & cruised without a sweat. Also, the...

    Boat Towing - Ranger 31

I'm dragging very close to the same load as that. It's a 30' twin 350's, flybridge, so about 12000 lbs. and a bit of windage. I had a 2500 single rear, long bed, crew cab w' 440 v8. Learned what does & doesn't work from that. Overall it was good and the 3/4 ton was acceptable, however...
