When underway, we fly a US flag on the stern staff, and, when in Canada, we also fly Canadian and British Columbia flags from our anchor light pole up top.
Opinion comment follows:
Once upon a time, this land had a king. Our forefathers got tired of the treatment they received from the king, so they kicked him out.
The people needed something to replace the royal king. That replacement was our flag. It took quite a while for US citizens to start pledging allegiance to the flag, however.
Quote from Wikipedia: "The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an expression of loyalty to the federal flag and the republic of the United States of America, originally composed by Christian Socialist Francis Bellamy (1855-1931) in 1892 and formally adopted by Congress as the pledge in 1942.[1] The Pledge has been modified four times since its composition, with the most recent change adding the words "under God" in 1954."
The US may be the only country where the citizens pledge allegiance to a flag in lieu of royalty, and it took from its introduction in 1892 to 1942 to become the official pledge.
