    Dismal v AICW

If you are in a hurry VA cut is the better option. Even with the Great Bridge Lock every other hour schedule. Hurrying up the Dismal Swamp could cost you time and money.

    GB36CT - Leaking Water Tanks

Good morning hiker. I just removed the port water tank that was leaking. It was stainless. Went through 12 Sawzall blades and 5 grinding discs. Looking to replace with Ronco Plastics 60 gal tank. Collecting cardboard to make mock up to insure I can get tank in lazerette to install. I have...

    Autopilot

Welcome Capt Paul. On a cable steering system, another steering quadrant is attached to the rudder shaft. That quadrant usually has teeth on it. There is then a gear that meshes with the quadrant that is attached to the mechanical drive unit via a chain drive.

Vandalism, or just people being rude?

Back in the day...... Now, not so much. Grew up sailing. Lived on my sailboat next to the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis. Knew going in that there would be the noise of tires going across the grates of the bridge. Was not a problem. But if it was, do I go up and close the gates to traffic...

Slow Hand 2023 To Lake Superior and back

Done both and each has their merits. Dismal Swamp is now the preferred route since the Great Bridge Lock is on limited schedule openings due to power failure. Hopefully you are snugged in somewhere today as it is a less than desirable travel day. Stay safe and enjoy.

    Potable water

Removed the port water tank. Assuming tanks had not been replaced, they were installed in 1979. It was a baffled 75gal stainless steel tank. There was a rusty film on the interior surfaces. Replacing with Ronco 60gal plastic.

    Wanted to say Hi!

Last boat I singlehanded was my 27' sailboat. Annapolis MD to Sarasota FL. That was in '89. Basically no boating til purchasing a GB 36. Singlehanded that from Marathon FL to Crisfield MD last September. For me, it is how easy is it to get around the boat? Wide side decks. Do you have to walk...

1973 36 GB water tank removal

Cig.... are the tanks interconnected or 3 separate tanks? Water pick up on top? I see one shut off. Interesting tanks. I have opted to keep the original starboard tank. No going through the labor intensive removal process again.

Is there such a thing as a two position dinghy davit?

I am installing a Dinghy Butler. It attaches to the transom and is hinged to clear the swim platform. Then lower dinghy.

Welcome aboard. While some may have been born aboard, we all had to learn boat stuff. You'll do fine. Somehow I've survived my many learning curves.

1973 36 GB water tank removal

Port tank out. Had to nibble it down to the last 1/3 piece that came out. Ended up being 2 vertical baffles and 1 horizontal in each 1/3 section. Last picture I believe is the result of previous owners continually stepping on the quadrant. To bend or replace? Cig/Carl.... where do you have a...

1973 36 GB water tank removal

Well, going to need to be cut up into thirds to get out. Not enough room to tilt the tank. Top hits the 90° drain fitting for the lazerette hatches. So tomorrow will use up a 4" grinding wheel and 4 or 5 saws all blades. Good news is Defender delivered my 3.5in exhaust hose and clamps

Locating the hull ID number on a 43' Pearson Portsmouth

Do you have a swim platform? I have found on some Grand Banks, mine included, 1979, that it is on the starboard side under the swim platform just above the boot top(stripe). I first noticed that when working in boatyards.
